Narwhal Bookmarks
Narwhals are fascinating to learn about and inspired our latest project Narwhal Bookmarks. Narwhals are commonly referred to as the Unicorns of the Sea. They are a medium-sized toothed whale that possesses a large “tusk” from a protruding canine tooth. It lives year-round in the Arctic waters around Greenland, Canada, and Russia.
Most Narwhals can live up to 50 years. The current population of the narwhal is about 75,000, so narwhals qualify for Near Threatened under the criterion of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Visit Wikipedia for more information on Narwhals.
To create your own narwhal bookmark, you will need some Hygloss Felt, Velour Paper and Sequins. Let’s scroll down to see the full supply list and directions.
Supplies:
- Craft Felt
- Velour Paper
- Bright Color Cardstock
- Sequins and Spangles
- Craft Scissors
- White Craft Paint
- Felt Glue or Kid Friendly Glue – For working with Kids always use Kid Friendly Glues
- Optional: Letters (printed to trace and cut felt letters), Scrapbook Sayings
Step One
Choose 3 main felt colors for your bookmark. One color for the base and two colors for your Narwhal. I used sea blue and white for the narwhal and pink for the bookmark base.
Step Two
Measure 6 inches by 2 inches onto the pink felt and cut out. This is your bookmark base. Next draw a simple whale shape onto the blue felt with a pen or pencil, then cut out. This is your whale shape.
Step Three
Cut out a curved tear drop shape and a small cone shape from the white felt. Then cut out 2 small circle shapes from pink tag paper, a small watermelon shape from pink felt and 2 shapes from dark blue velour paper.
Step Four
Assemble your narwhal by layering the tear drop, circle, eye and watermelon shapes onto the narwhal base with kids craft glue. Let dry.
Step Five
Attach the finished narwhal to the bookmark with more kids craft glue. Add a variety of sequins to the bookmark and some white craft paint to highlight the eyes. Let dry.
At this point you could add your child’s name, “Fun”,”Donut”, “Sea”, “Narwhal” or “Happy” to the bookmark. This project is such a great way to explore the many creatures found under the sea like the majestic Narwhals.
